Hatchet: An essay

Intro
The hatchet is an essential tool to Brian’s survival during his time in the Canadian wilderness. The book is called Hatchet because Brian used it for survival from beginning to end.

You can use a hatchet in many different ways. In other words, multi-purpose.

There are many kinds of hatchets such as this Swedish one.

P1 It was Brian’s only tool for most of the story. (T)
His mother gave it to him before the plane flew. When the plane crashed, the hatchet was fastened to his belt. (E) He began his survival journey in the Canadian wilderness. He found out it was very useful and doesn’t just work like an axe. There were many tricks Brian found out by using a hatchet. (XI)

P2 It can be used to chop some wood. (T)
A hatchet usually weighs 1-3lbs and is sharp and good for cutting, even though an axe is better for cutting wood. If you want to cut down trees, a hatchet is one suggestion.  (E) A hatchet, just like an axe, is designed to be sharp enough to cut wood and if you have enough wood you will eventually build a wooden shelter like Brian’s shelter. (X) Wood is a great resource for a shelter (temporary home in the wilderness), a bow and arrow (to fight animals such as birds), a fishing spear (to catch sea animals such as fish) and a raft (useful as a boat). (I)

P3 It can attack animals. (T)
A hatchet is good for protection against and from harmful animals, just like when Brian protected himself from the porcupine and its quills, but it is still hard to kill a skunk with a hatchet because it could revoltingly spray you in under a second - the best way to kill a skunk is a live booby trap. (EX)
A hatchet can separate an animal’s joints and quarters more easily than a knife, even though a Katana would be sharper.

If you have a hatchet or other sharp tool, you could easily attack and defend yourself against many animals. It is hard to attack if you have no fighting tools.  (I) A whetstone can sharpen a hatchet so that animals take more damage and more animals will die. Be careful - if you overuse the whetstone and your hatchet is out of control, you might accidentally severely cut off some fraction of your skin. It can hurt a lot!

You could also use the gun or bow and arrow, but if things become too close the hatchet will help. A hatchet can also develop a splint.(X)

P4 It can help start a log fire. (T)
It can help sparks that start a fire. You can throw a hatchet onto a rock so that sparks will appear and make you one step closer to making a fire.  (E) Brian accidentally threw his hatchet onto a rock and sparks appeared. (X)
Log fires keep you warm, helps cook food and smaller fires will protect you from more animals just like Brian kept the fire small. (the porcupine couldn’t enter the shelter) Log fires’ temperatures average 875℃ - about as hot as a forest fire. (I)

P5 It can be used to hunt for food. (T)
A hatchet can create tools such as the bow and arrow and fishing spear. (E)
Brian used the fishing spear to catch fish and the bow and arrow to catch birds. They were both pretty hard to catch, weren’t they? But eventually he succeeded. (X)
It is important to hunt for food in the wilderness because if you’re out in the wilderness, you will need tools such as a hatchet to make hunting easier. If you have no tools, you will need to be strong and use your hands. (I)

P6 It can be used to cut someone’s way though certain places. (T)
A hatchet can cut through thick and hard surfaces such as wood, metal and ice. (E)
Brian cut his way through the plane exterior. Brian can also cut through the forest with the hatchet. (X)
It’s important to cut through certain places sometimes because sometimes it is very hard to find your way out or you might need to get something out of a difficult place. Using the hatchet, it is easy, much easier than the knife. (I)

End:
Without a hatchet, Brian would have worse chance of death. Without a hatchet, it is harder to survive in the woods. Without a hatchet, you wouldn’t be able to do many things instantly. If you had multiple spare hatchets, if you lost one, you would be able to find a spare unless you had none left. If you were ever to be in the wilderness, the hatchet is a very useful multi-purpose tool/weapon. If it were useless and/or completely blunt, you would need another sharp tool. It is also practically awesome even if you have never done any tricks with it. (I haven’t.)

Humour

Dictionary definitions 01) the quality of being funny 02) aka sense of humour -  the ability to appreciate or express that which is humorous 03) situations, speech or writings that are thought to be humourous Origin From the Latin humor meaning   moisture , related to Latin ūmēre to be wet, Old Norse vökr moist, Greek hugros wet In ancient and medieval physiology, it refers to any of the four body fluids (blood, phlegm, choler, and melancholy or black bile) which were thought to determine physical condition and state of mind. About my mum

About my mum But not the only person I love. Born on 27 June 1980 in the Philippines, my mum (full name: Wrigley Expression Santos) currently works for Auckland Council. She writes about services of the massive Auckland Council. She and my dad (Glenn Santos, born May 6, 1979) worked very hard and they migrated from the Philippines to New Zealand. My mum works very hard and has never been fired a single time. That means everytime she moves into a different office, she leaves work.  She did many things on Google Drive over the recent few years. She takes care of her second baby (Stella Lily Santos, born October 30, 2015) firmly and she and I have fun with her. My mum really hates cats. They scare her and sends my dad to scare them away.  Sometime in April she encountered a dog. She kept still and told the council there was a dog out on the street. If it were a cat, the situation would be even worse. She loves me very much. Sometimes she can tell me off because she ca...
