Learning from my struggles

The challenges I faced at school in the last few weeks were behaviour, concentration and instructions. I had problems listening to and understanding instructions. In Hard Materials class, I couldn't understand enough how to use the equipment such as the belt sander. I used the machines improperly. Due to this, I was moved out of Hard Materials class and I decided to move to Music class, which is safe. I was having a hard time concentrating. One time, I got upset that I still need to do my work while other students were already allowed to play games.  Out of frustration, I spoke very impolitely to my teacher and teacher aide when they told me to finish my tasks.  My mum and dad had to talk to me about these issues and gave me time to think. They took away my multimedia privileges for exactly  4  days! The privileges I lost were my computer, the television, the Nintendo 2DS, the iMac and simply every computer or mobile in the house. My only freedom was bo...

Preparing for a day like today

Everyday, we try to prepare our children for what they might encounter out there while we are not with them. There are days when you put in double the effort. Today is one such day for us. Today, there will be a school fundraising event where kids will ride their wheels to raise money for a school van. No-brainer, right? Just a regular fun time for the kids. I truly hope so. I am on my way to work, replaying in my head the reminders we've given our son. Have we told him everything he needed to know? Will he remember them all? I walked him to school today, talking non-stop, trying to cram all my instructions in those few minutes. You see, one of the ways to help Michael is to discuss everything that could happen. When things don't go as planned  It is a wet Auckland day. In fact, I've got my gumboots on. So I told him to prepare for the possibility that the much-awaited event might be postponed. This talk is crucial. Last term, Swimming Day was cancelled due to ...

Humour

Dictionary definitions 01) the quality of being funny 02) aka sense of humour -  the ability to appreciate or express that which is humorous 03) situations, speech or writings that are thought to be humourous Origin From the Latin humor meaning   moisture , related to Latin ūmēre to be wet, Old Norse vökr moist, Greek hugros wet In ancient and medieval physiology, it refers to any of the four body fluids (blood, phlegm, choler, and melancholy or black bile) which were thought to determine physical condition and state of mind. (Found this information online.) What does it mean when a person has a sense of humour? A person is thought to have a sense of humour when other people find him funny. Sometimes I have a sense of humour because my family laughs at my jokes. About my mum

About my mum But not the only person I love. Born on 27 June 1980 in the Philippines, my mum (full name: Wrigley Expression Santos) currently works for Auckland Council. She writes about services of the massive Auckland Council. She and my dad (Glenn Santos, born May 6, 1979) worked very hard and they migrated from the Philippines to New Zealand. My mum works very hard and has never been fired a single time. That means everytime she moves into a different office, she leaves work.  She did many things on Google Drive over the recent few years. She takes care of her second baby (Stella Lily Santos, born October 30, 2015) firmly and she and I have fun with her. My mum really hates cats. They scare her and sends my dad to scare them away.  Sometime in April she encountered a dog. She kept still and told the council there was a dog out on the street. If it were a cat, the situation would be even worse. She loves me very much. Sometimes she can tell me off because she ca...

I get by with a little help from my folks

Regular, inexpensive sports shoes. With memory foam, size 7.  Nothing obviously unusual. And yet, it is. Do you see it? Yes, there's Velcro. An answer to a situation that can get stressful. Hi, I'm Michael 's mum. He used to be "Mikey" at home and in school. But he felt it's more fitting now to be "Michael" at school. Mikey just recently learned how to tie his shoelaces. Something we learn at what... age 5? At 11, most of us can do it with our eyes closed. But being on the spectrum is a curious thing. As he said in yesterday's post, some things are easier but some things are harder. How can he type with two hands and use the right fingers without taking any typing lessons and yet struggle with the fine motor skill of tying his laces? It's a mystery I'll leave for the professionals to explain. He struggled a lot, got frustrated but with much effort and a lot of GRRR and AARGH THIS IS SO HAARRRD, he is now abl...

About me and my blog

My name is Michael. I am 11 years old and I am mildly autistic. I feel neutral about being autistic because it makes things easier but also makes things harder. I can easily use the keyboard on a computer and the controls on an operating system. I can easily ride a bike or scooter. I can easily get dressed. (like a teenager does) I can easily read non-fiction books. I can easily walk to school. etc. I sometimes struggle with fictional reading. I sometimes struggle with a little other learning. I sometimes struggle with behaviour. I sometimes struggle with... well, not too much to say. One of my ambitions is to found a company and keep it running for at least 10 years. Another one of my ambitions is to be a scientist, find out what's going on, even in space. Another one of my ambitions is to code and make a game, an operating system, etc. I am going to achieve all of them by listening carefully to instructions, doing tasks successfully ⅋& helping others achiev...
